Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz have reached an agreement to swap Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis. This is a blockbuster deal that involves both teams. The Mavericks have confirmed the trade after the shocking news broke just after midnight ET.
The Mavericks will receive Max Christie , Markieff Mors and the Lakers 2029 first round pick. In the first trade reported by ESPN days before the February 6th trade deadline, the Jazz will receive Jalenhood-Schifino as well as a 2025 2nd-round selection via the Los Angeles Clippers.
This trade is a major and unprecedented in NBA’s history..
This is shocking from the Maverick’s perspective. Doncic is a 25-year-old player who has consistently been among the best in the league since joining the league. He was named to five NBA first teams in a row and led the Mavericks into the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Boston Celtics.
He has been rated as one of the top five players in the entire world for his career. His averages are 28.6 points per game, 8.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assist, while shooting 47%. Rarely do players of this caliber get traded, unless they are determined to leave the city. According to Marc Stein Doncic didn’t make a similar request. Bill Reiter, CBS Sports NBA Insider reports that Doncic did not plan to stay in Dallas after his contract expired in 2026.
The Dallas Morning News reported that Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison said: “We feel like we were ahead of a turbulent summer. He was eligible for the Supermax, and he had a year before he could opt out of a contract.” We felt we were ahead of the game. We know that teams are lining up to sign him when he becomes available.
The Mavericks are in ninth place with a record of 26-23 in the Western Conference. The Mavericks are only 1.5 games behind 11th place, which means they will miss out on the Play-In Tournament. They are also 2.5 games away from a guaranteed top-six spot.
The Lakers gained from the Mavericks. Doncic is a superstar that could be the face of the franchise in the coming decade. The organization is no longer worried about what will happen when LeBron James leaves.
James, even at age 40, can still dial it up from time to time. He showed this just hours before the trade a href=”https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/lakers-trade-anthony-davis for Luka… James can still turn it up, even at 40 years old, as he demonstrated hours before the trade, when he scored a triple-double an impressive win against the New York Knicks. James cannot do this every night. With Doncic at his side, he can choose where he plays, keeping him fresh throughout the playoffs.
The Lakers won eight out of ten games to move up to fifth in the West with a 28-19 record. However, they were not considered title contenders due to James’ advancing age and their poor offensive creativity and defense. Davis’ loss will hurt the Lakers, but it won’t be an issue anymore. James and Doncic are they enough to compete? Soon we’ll find out.
