US suspends offensive cyber operations against Russia

US suspends offensive cyber operations against Russia

The US has suspended operations and planning for offensive cyber operations against Russia. This is something that comes on the heels of Trump dressing down the President of Ukraine.

Vance previously berated Zelensky for not enough gratitude. The President went on to say that it is Ukraine’s fault.

“Due to operational security concerns, we do not comment nor discuss cyber intelligence, plans, or operations. There is no greater priority to Secretary Hegseth than the safety of the warfighter in all operations, to include the cyber domain,” a top ranking defense official told the media, referring to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

“It is not uncommon for the Pentagon to pause actions which are potentially destabilizing or provocative for negotiations, including cyber-effects operations,” Jason Kikta, an ex Cyber Command official, told the media. “But if a planning pause was also directed, that could cause offensive options to become stale and therefore nonviable.”

“Any extended period without checking on access and updating planning, risks losing that access or missing a critical change,” Kikta told the media.

Russia and the US are fighting it out in cyberspace, present and former US officials say. The Kremlin sees cyberspace as a big part of the war zone.

For their part, American military and intelligence hackers have in recent years increasingly gone after Russian cybercriminals and intelligence operatives.

However, not all US agencies have stopped this.

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the main civilian agency for protecting federal networks from hacks, stated on Sunday night on X that its work is to “defend against all cyber threats to U.S. Critical Infrastructure, including from Russia.”

“There has been no change in our posture,” the agency went on to say, in an apparent response to media reports that the agency was emphasizing non-Russia threats. “Any reporting to the contrary is fake and undermines our national security.”

A lot of people believe that the United States is about to withdraw from the Ukraine war all of a sudden. This is something that has left American allies in a bind and they are now confused about how reliable American support is going to be in the future.
